WiMAX Development in Asia February 9-15
February 13, 2009
- China's Huawei Technologies and Intel have launched a WiMAX IOT (Interoperability Testing) lab in Beijing, Nikkei reported on February 12. The new IOT lab is a joint project between the two companies, whose collaboration on WiMAX development dated back to April 2005. The new lab is projected to provide IOT services for the global WiMAX industry and help accelerate the commercialization of WiMAX devices. Currently Huawei boasts a team of 2,000 dedicated to WiMAX R&D.

- China's ZTE rolled out an 802.16e WiMAX RRU (Remote Radio Unit) device R9110, which sports a compact footprint unparalleled in the industry, according to a February 10 Nikkei report. ZTE's R9110 is based on BF4x8 multi-antenna technology; compared with the traditional MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output)-based devices, the R9110 is expected to help telecom operators reduce the number of base stations by 35% to 50%, as the multi-antenna technology is capable of enhancing the signal quality of a single base station, making for improved network coverage and performance.
